Student Spaces Upgraded

St Mary’s College Ipswich has welcomed funding from the Local Schools Community Fund, which has helped upgrade student spaces, providing increased access to shaded eating areas.

The area outside the tuckshop has been fitted with new shade sails and tables and chairs meaning more students can enjoy their lunch in a covered area, while still surrounded by green space.

St Mary’s College received funding for the project from the Local Schools Community Fund, a Federal Government initiative designed to benefit students and their school community by contributing to small scale projects and their associated costs at the school level.

St Mary’s College Principal Judith Finan thanked Federal Member for Blair Mr Shayne Neumann for his help in securing the funding when he visited the site. “We are grateful to Mr Neumann and his office for making these improvements possible,” she said. “It is nice for our students to be able to enjoy their lunchtimes outside the classroom in green spaces. Especially during these challenging times, when many things are not as they usually are, this is one small thing our students can find joy in each day.”

College Captain Daniele Stark said the area was already a favourite with many students. “All year levels eat lunch together, in shared spaces, and we have loved having more shaded areas to spread out,” she said. “We all try and support each other at St Mary’s, and eating lunch together helps older students connect with younger students so we can help them out if they need it.”

These upgrades are the latest in a series of improvements St Mary’s College has undertaken in recent years. “We are very fortunate at our campus to have the beautiful Mercy House as our main reception and staff offices. This heritage listed building was the first constructed on our campus, and is a visual reminder of our history as a school which dates back more than 157 years,” Mrs Finan said.

“Whenever we make changes to our buildings or facilities, we work hard to honour this history while providing the very best teaching and learning spaces for our community. Particularly as the weather warms up these new facilities are sure to be put to good use.”
