Students step off to Nationals
SIXTEEN energetic students from St Mary’s College competed in the State Championships for Sports Aerobics at Ormiston College on Saturday.
9 of these students were defending their reigning title after being crowned National Champions last year, which was the first time students had entered such a competition.
Once again students wowed the judging panel with their ability to perform with tenacity and enviable unison. They were ranked 1st in all 5 sections.
Fourteen-year-old competitor Alexa Murrin said that the competition was even more intense this year, with every competing team stepping things up a notch.
“It is satisfying to come away with a win knowing that we were against some tough competition,” stated Alexa Murrin.
“We are really excited to be heading to Nationals again and look forward to the challenge,” Alexa added.
The recently formed Junior Team which is comprised of 7 students (pictured front row) are also off to Nationals winning the chance to compete by being awarded an invitational wildcard.
Principal Judith Finan was delighted to receive the news as was the entire College community.
“The sport has had a huge growth at St Mary’s College, with younger students aspiring to follow in the footsteps of their Seniors,” stated Mrs Finan.
The National Champions came first in two divisions; Secondary Schools Large Team and Secondary Schools Pre-Choreographed Team. This has given them the chance of contending for two championships and we cannot wait for the outcome!
The teams compete at Chandler Theatre mid-August.
